 Gov’t Absorbs Bawia Technical Institute, First Admissions To Begin September 2026

BAWIA, Western Region The Government of Ghana has officially absorbed the long-abandoned Bawia Technical Institute into the national TVET system, with the school set to open its doors to the first batch of students in September 2026 for the 2026/2027 academic year.

The announcement was made on Friday, July 17, 2026, during a courtesy visit and stakeholder engagement led by the Western Regional Director of Ghana TVET Service to HRM Nana Blawey Kandango III, Divisional Chief of Bawia Traditional Area, at the Bawia Royal Palace.

The engagement brought together chiefs, elders, assembly members, youth leaders from Jomoro Municipality, and media personnel.

Two Programmes To Start In September
Addressing the gathering, the Western Regional Director said the absorption of Bawia Tech forms part of government’s agenda to expand access to technical and vocational education, especially in rural communities across the Western Region.

He outlined key details:
1. Admissions will begin in September 2026 for the 2026/2027 academic year.
2. Initial programmes to be offered are Welding & Fabrication Engineering and Automotive Engineering.
3. Recruitment of a Principal, tutors and staff is currently ongoing through Ghana TVET Service.
4. Government, in partnership with development partners, is working to equip workshops and classrooms ahead of the opening.

Chiefs Hail Decision, Urge Youth To Take Advantage
HRM Nana Blawey Kandango III, Chief of Bawia, thanked the President and the Ministry of Education for honoring the long-standing request of the Bawia people.

He noted that the Bawia Technical School had been abandoned for over 24 years, a situation he said had affected the people of Bawia and Nzema. He urged government to fulfill all its promises and pledged the full support of the Palace, Elders, and Community to ensure the smooth establishment and operation of the Institute.

HRM Nana Azane Amihere I, Chief of Azulezu, also called on youth in Nzema and Bawia to embrace the opportunity.
“This is a blessing for all of us in Nzema, especially the youth,” he said. “They must take advantage to acquire technical and vocational skills which will help them get jobs early, especially with the Petroleum Hub Development Company in Jomoro.”

Chiefs further urged parents across Jomoro Municipality, Nzema Maanle, and the Western Region to enroll their wards, stressing that the Institute will provide job-ready skills and help reduce youth unemployment.

Youth leaders present appealed for scholarships and priority admission for indigenes of Jomoro and Nzema.

Call For Support Ahead Of Opening
The Ghana TVET Service, Bawia Traditional Council, and Jomoro Youth Association are calling on stakeholders, NGOs, and the general public to support the establishment of the Institute.

Media houses have also been encouraged to help with public sensitization on admissions and programmes ahead of September.
