Nzema Maanle Unity and Development Federation Petitions President Mahama for 10% Oil Revenue Royalties

Nzema Maanle Unity and Development Federation Petitions President Mahama for 10% Oil Revenue Royalties

The Nzema Maanle Unity and Development Federation paid a visit to the Jubilee House today, petitioning President John Dramani Mahama to grant the people of Nzema a 10% royalty from oil revenue. This move aims to compensate the local population for the negative impacts of oil exploration on their livelihoods.

According to the federation, the people of Nzema have borne the brunt of oil exploration without receiving adequate compensation or benefits. The petition seeks to address this perceived injustice by allocating a portion of oil revenue to the local community.

This development comes on the heels of similar petitions and controversies surrounding the petroleum hub project in Jomoro, Western Region. The Coalition of Concerned Nzema People had previously petitioned President Mahama to suspend the project, citing inadequate consultation with local landowners and inadequate compensation

The Nzema Maanle Unity and Development Federation's petition highlights the need for equitable distribution of natural resource revenue and greater community involvement in decision-making processes. As the government considers the petition, it remains to be seen how this will impact the lives of Nzema residents and the oil industry as a whole.
